Ivana Drienovska winnaar Bertus Kemp stipendium 2021
Het Genootschap ter bevordering van Natuur-, Genees- en Heelkunde is bijzonder verheugd om voor de eerste keer het Bertus Kemp Stipendium uit te reiken. Na een zorgvuldig beoordeling en selectie door een onafhankelijke wetenschappelijke jury mag het Genootschap dr Ivana Drienovska van harte feliciteren met het winnen van het Bertus Kemp stipendium 2021. Ivana is recent als Universitair Docent gestart bij de afdeling ‘Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences’ van de faculteit Bèta-wetenschappen van de Vrije Universiteit met als onderzoeksonderwerp het ontwerpen van synthetische enzymen.
Dankzij het stipendium zal ze het laboratorium van Prof. Kathrin Lang (TU Munchen) kunnen bezoeken om nieuwe technieken te leren voor het genereren van orthologe tRNA/tRNA synthetase paren om zo nieuwe non-canonical aminozuren te kunnen incorporeren in artificiele enzymen.
Het Genootschap ter bevordering van Natuur-, Genees- en Heelkunde stelt jaarlijks een subsidie van maximaal € 20.000 ter beschikking voor jonge biochemische onderzoekers om onderzoekssamenwerkingen te initiëren voor toekomstige onderzoeksconsortia. De subsidie wordt mogelijk gemaakt door het Bertus Kemp stipendium, vernoemd naar Bertus Kemp die als hoogleraar met leeropdracht: biochemie ten behoeve van de tandheelkunde van 1979 tot 1985 werkzaam was bij de UvA. De deadline voor aanmeldingen is jaarlijks 1 mei.

The Genootschap ter bevordering van Natuur-, Genees- en Heelkunde (Society for the promotion of Physics, Medicine and Surgery) is very pleased to awards the first Bertus Kemp stipendium. Following a careful judgement and selection by an independent scientific advisory board the Genootschap can congratulate Dr. Ivana Drienovska with the Bertus Kemp stipendium 2021 award. Ivana recently started as tenure track assistant professor at the Department of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit (VU) Amsterdam with a goal of establishing an independent research career in the area of protein biochemistry, with an emphasis on creating and engineering artificial enzymes with genetically encoded non-canonical amino acids.
The award will enable an exchange visit to the laboratory of Prof. Kathrin Lang (ETH Munich) to learn and employ a new technique of engineering orthogonal tRNA/tRNA synthetase pairs for incorporation of novel non-canonical amino acids.
The society provides a grant of up to € 20,000 for young biochemical researchers to initiate research collaborations for future research consortia. The subsidy is made possible by the Bertus Kemp stipend, named after Bertus Kemp who was professor in biochemistry from 1979 till 1985 at the University of Amsterdam.
